Web Site Helps Filmmakers Bring Green to Screen
Published Jul 09, 2008
Film stars have long championed the environment in public service announcements. Now even producing those spots is kinder to the planet.
The California Film Commission has published the Green Resource Guide, an online directory to help filmmakers be more environmentally friendly.
“We’d built up a comprehensive frequently-asked-questions section on our Web site. What we didn’t have was anything to do with environmental practices,” says Director Amy Lemisch.
The guide covers a broad array of topics, ranging from where to find sustainably harvested lumber for sets to food banks that accept surplus meals from caterers.
Lemisch adds that the information is particularly helpful for production away from traditional shooting locations.
Since its September 2007 launch, the guide has been well received, and the commission is “building on it,” she says. “The studios have been very generous with sharing their internal guidelines, plus we’re hearing from vendors who want to be listed. Many of them we never knew about, so once we check their references we add them.”
