Trader Joe’s Has New Neighbor
Published Jul 02, 2008

Trader Joe’s, the hip grocery chain that originated in California and now is coast to coast, is experiencing competition on its home turf.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores began popping in the state in 2007, most recently on July 2, 2008, in Manhattan Beach – two doors down from a Trader Joe’s,, which bills itself as “Your Neighborhood Grocery Store.” Both chains operate stores of about 10,000 square feet, much smaller than traditional supermarkets.

According to the Los Angeles Times, 32 Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market outlets have been established in Southern California, and 70 more are planned. Currently there are 89 Trader Joe’s stores in Southern California.

A British company, Tesco PLC, owns Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets. Theo Albrecht of Germany, co-founder of the Aldi grocery chain, acquired Trader Joe’s from its California owner in 1979.

Tesco also operates Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets in Arizona and Nevada, and it plans to open stores in Northern California in 2009.
